Doubleknot connects LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® to career development and team building through interactive workshops and coaching sessions
Andrea & Nick Fruhling
Trained facilitators in the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® method and materials
LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® is a process that enhances innovation and business performance by deepening reflection and supporting effective dialogue for everyone.
It is a method that helps participants imagine, describe, and make sense of the work at hand, and can be used in a variety of contexts in organizations, teams, and with individuals. Essentially, it’s a different way to think, and a different way to have a conversation.
The Power of Play
Play is particularly powerful when people need to be creative, collaborate, and learn. Especially when they face complex and unpredictable challenges. Playing makes us free to take risks, imagine the unthinkable, and take on new roles that we otherwise wouldn’t explore. With limits in place and structured rules and agreements, play provides enough boundaries within play to create an environment that promotes creative thinking and learning through flow (Cskszenmihalyi, M). Working with metaphors with LEGO pulls on the imagination, and always has a purpose.
“In a room where engagement is often measured in brief moments, this workshop scored 100%. Each participant, myself included, was not just present but deeply involved. The tangible nature of LEGO transcended traditional communication barriers, enabling us to express complex ideas with a simple snap of plastic.” — Ahmed Ali, Senior Global Director of Product Design, Staffbase
Drivers of LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®
- Construction (of knowledge) Learning happens when we think through our hands, creating something outside of ourselves. Building helps create new theories and knowledge.
- Metaphors A form of thinking and language through which we understand or experience one thing in terms of another.
- Story Making Lets you imagine and describe what might happen before it happens. Used to invent, discover, explore, decide, and tell the truth.
- Imagination The resource we all have that allows us to explore, conceptualize, and test new possible realities. Considering what has not yet been, but could be.
Applications
- Strategy Strategy-making and refining process
- Innovation Providing a different lens to open up insights and approaches
- Culture Diagnosing challenges and establishing principles at the team or organizational level
- Team Collaboration Developing a framework for better collaboration within the team and between teams
- Coaching Helping clients visualize the current issue, goals, and the path forward
- Identity Constructing a clear and shared identity
Building LEGO is always fun, but using them as metaphors to tell our stories was quite the experience. Through this workshop we opened up, we shared, and ultimately, I learned a little more about myself and who I aspire to be with the help of these colourful blocks and the collaborative space Andrea created to encourage us to dig deeper. – Annie Yeung, Senior Product Designer, Staffbase
Who is this for?
- New Teams Establishing roles, culture, and a vision for the team
- Established Teams Developing strategies to become high-performing teams
- Individuals Clarifying and learning more about who they are and how they can uniquely contribute in their context
Organizations we work with
While the workshop was a lot of fun and great to strengthen bonds with our colleagues, it was also a powerful tool for self knowledge, and identifying more clearly our strengths and areas of improvement for the road ahead. — Tai Civita, Staff Product Designer, Staffbase
Doubleknot Works and LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®
Doubleknot Works combines LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® concepts with Dr. Norm Amundson’s internationally recognized writing and research on Metaphors in Career Development.
Working with metaphors gives participants the opportunity to gain new perspectives, insights, and understanding to complex challenges.
Connecting with metaphors provides us with a strong foundation from which we create customized in-person and virtual workshops and coaching sessions. Each session is tailored to suit your needs, and supports team development and growth, while also providing a facilitated thinking, communication, and problem-solving technique, specific to the topic at hand.
Most importantly, sessions are fun, hands-on, and engaging!
Nick and Andrea didn't just run a workshop; they unlocked a door to innovative problem-solving that I didn't even realize was there. The takeaway was clear: in the right hands, LEGO bricks are more than play – they're powerful tools for effective problem solving and engaging team collaboration. – Ahmed Ali, Senior Global Director of Product Design, Staffbase
